How we review

The same method for every product, so a score means the same thing in every category.

1. We start from primary sources

Every review is built from the vendor’s own product pages, documentation, pricing page and changelog, read in the month the review is published or updated. Where we cite figures the vendor claims, such as accuracy rates or uptime, we say they are the vendor’s claims.

2. We look for the catch

Free-plan limits, credit caps, introductory prices that renew higher, per-seat jumps, watermarks, export limits and lock-in. If it will surprise you on your first invoice, it belongs in the review.

3. We score four things

  • Features: how completely the product solves the job it is sold for.
  • Ease of use: time to first useful result and the learning curve after that.
  • Value: what you get for the money at the plan most buyers need, renewal prices included.
  • Support: documentation, community and the support channels on each plan.

For books we score depth, clarity, practicality and value. The overall score is our editorial judgment across these, on a five-point scale. No product scores a perfect 5.

4. We say who it is for

Every review has a best-for and a skip-it-if list, plus alternatives. Sometimes the right answer is a cheaper or free tool, and we say so.

5. We keep reviews current

Software changes fast. Each review shows the date it was last updated and the month its pricing was checked. Tell us when something is out of date and we will fix it.

What we do not do

  • We do not accept payment for reviews, ratings or rankings.
  • We do not let vendors see or approve a review before it is published.
  • We do not claim hands-on testing we have not done.
