Pinecone reviewA managed vector database for RAG, semantic search and AI agents
Excellent
Brent score, out of 5
Pinecone is a fully managed vector database that lets developers add semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) without running their own infrastructure. The free Starter tier covers prototypes, Builder at $20 a month suits small production apps, and Standard is pay-as-you-go above a $50 monthly minimum. Costs are usage-based on reads, writes and storage, so heavy query workloads need careful estimating.

Best for
- Developers building RAG chatbots and AI agents
- Teams that want vector search without running infrastructure
- Startups moving a prototype into production
- Enterprises needing SSO, private endpoints and a 99.95% SLA
Skip it if
- Projects happy to self-host an open-source vector store for free
- Teams already served by vector search in their existing database
- Very read-heavy apps on a tight, fixed budget
You built a chatbot on top of your documents, and it works in a notebook. Now you need search that returns the right passages in milliseconds across millions of chunks, stays up, and does not need a database engineer on call.
Pinecone is a managed vector database built for that job. You send it embeddings, it stores and indexes them, and your app queries for the most similar results to ground an LLM's answer. It also hosts embedding and reranking models and an Assistant API for document Q&A.
Below we explain the four plans and the usage units, because they decide what Pinecone really costs at scale.
What is Pinecone?
Pinecone is a serverless vector database. Developers create indexes, upsert vectors with metadata, and query by similarity, with support for dense, sparse and full-text search. Pinecone handles scaling, replication and backups. On top of the database it offers hosted inference (embedding models such as llama-text-embed-v2 and rerankers) and Pinecone Assistant, which ingests files and answers questions with citations. Pricing combines plan minimums with usage measured in read units, write units and GB stored.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Free Starter tier with 2 GB storage, 2M write units and 1M read units a month
- Builder plan at a flat $20/month includes 10 GB storage and 5M write units
- Dense, sparse and full-text indexes, plus hosted embedding and reranking models
- Standard includes a 3-week trial with $300 in credits
- Enterprise adds a 99.95% uptime SLA, private endpoints, CMEK and audit logs
- Bring Your Own Cloud option runs Pinecone inside your cloud account
What could be better
- Usage pricing (read units, write units, storage) is harder to predict than a flat fee
- Standard has a $50/month minimum and Enterprise a $500/month minimum
- Free tier is limited to one project, us-east-1 and community support
- HIPAA costs $190/month extra on Standard

Key features of Pinecone
Serverless vector indexes
Create dense, sparse or full-text indexes and query them with metadata filters. Pinecone scales storage and compute without you managing nodes.
Hosted embeddings and reranking
Generate embeddings and rerank results inside Pinecone. On paid plans, llama-text-embed-v2 costs $0.16 per million tokens and reranking $2 per 1,000 requests.
Pinecone Assistant
Upload documents and get a retrieval-backed assistant with an API. It is priced by storage, input, output and context tokens.
Dedicated Read Nodes
Standard and Enterprise can provision dedicated read capacity for predictable performance on heavy query workloads.
Backup, restore and import
Standard adds backups ($0.10/GB/month), restore ($0.15/GB) and bulk import from object storage ($0.25/GB).
Enterprise security
Enterprise includes SSO with SAML roles, SCIM, private endpoints, customer-managed encryption keys, audit logs, HIPAA and a 99.95% uptime SLA.

RAG chatbot over company documents
A team chunks 50,000 support articles, embeds them with Pinecone's hosted model and stores them in one index. The chatbot retrieves the top passages for each question before calling the LLM.
Semantic product search
An online store indexes product descriptions so shoppers can search by meaning, such as 'warm waterproof jacket for hiking'. Metadata filters narrow results by size and stock.
Long-term memory for AI agents
A developer gives an AI agent a namespace per user to store past conversations. The agent recalls relevant history by similarity search at the start of each session.
How to get started with Pinecone
- 1
Create a free Starter account and an API key
- 2
Create an index and pick dense, sparse or full-text
- 3
Embed and upsert a sample of your documents
- 4
Run similarity queries from your app and measure read units used
- 5
Move to Builder or Standard when you need more capacity, regions or SSO
