Receipts in a shoebox, invoices in a spreadsheet, and a bank statement you match line by line at the end of the quarter. Your accountant wants clean numbers, and you want to know whether you can afford the next hire without waiting for a year-end report.
Xero is cloud accounting software that connects to your bank, matches transactions for you, sends invoices with online payment links and keeps everything in one ledger your accountant can log into. It does not charge per user, and its app marketplace fills most gaps, from inventory to ecommerce.
This review covers what each plan includes in the US and Australia in 2026, the limits that catch people out, and when a rival might fit better.

Key features of Xero
Bank feeds and reconciliation
Transactions flow in from connected bank accounts, and Xero suggests matches against invoices and bills. Auto-reconcile is included on US Growing and Established and costs $5/month on Early.
Invoicing and online payments
Send quotes and invoices with payment links so customers can pay online; payment fees apply. Xero claims online payments can get you paid up to twice as fast.
Bills and document capture
Smart document capture reads bills and receipts and drafts them in Xero. US business plans include free standard ACH bill payments; other payment methods carry fees.
Cash flow and reporting
Cash flow forecasts run 30 days on Early, 60 on Growing and 180 on Established in the US. Higher tiers add custom dashboards, budgets, KPI analysis and industry benchmarking.
Payroll
In the US, Xero Payroll is powered by Gusto at $36/month plus $6 per employee or contractor. Australian plans include payroll for 5 to 50 people depending on the tier, plus GST and BAS tools.
App marketplace
Xero lists more than 1,000 connected apps for inventory, CRM, receipts, ecommerce and more. This is often the deciding factor for businesses with specific workflows.
